Planning for Outdoor Weddings when it Rains

Because the music should flow—rain or shine

Outdoor weddings are beautiful. There’s something magical about exchanging vows surrounded by nature. But with outdoor venues comes one very real question:

What happens to the music if it rains?

Here’s how to plan ahead so your ceremony music stays beautiful, no matter what the forecast says.

1. Ask Your Musicians Early About Rain Contingencies

Not all ensembles are equipped to handle weather changes. At Uptown Strings, we always discuss backup plans during booking, so you know exactly what to expect.

Ask about:

  • Covered performance spaces

  • Flooring (we can't play on wet grass!)

  • Whether amplification can be moved easily

2. Provide Shelter (Even If Guests Are Uncovered)

Musicians can’t perform in direct rain or heavy wind—even light moisture risks damaging instruments. A small pop-up tent, umbrella cover, or gazebo can be the difference between live music and silence.

Tip: Transparent or white tents keep it elegant and photo-friendly.

3. Plan for Power Access If Using Amplification

For outdoor receptions or amplified duos, ensure there's access to a safe, grounded outlet. Extension cords and surge protectors should be weather-rated if rain is in the forecast.

If unsure, ask us! We’ll guide you.

4. Have a Clear Rain Plan for the Whole Ceremony

If you have a backup indoor space or tent, let your music team know ahead of time. We’ll help coordinate timing, sound needs, and setup so there’s no stress or silence during transitions.

The goal: Keep the atmosphere intact, even when the location shifts.

5. Stay Flexible with Timing and Cues

Weather delays happen. With live musicians, we can adjust in real time to match the revised flow—no awkward playlist gaps, no tech glitches.

We follow the emotion of the moment, not just the original timeline.

Final Thoughts

Rain doesn’t have to ruin your ceremony. With the right planning, your music can still create the atmosphere you imagined—calm, elegant, and full of feeling.

At Uptown Strings, we help couples and planners prepare for the unexpected so you can focus on what matters most.
